Legal Advocate
Amber Prince
Amber has been the legal advocate at Atira since June 2006, although she began at Atira as a summer student in the legal advocacy program in 2005. Before, joining Atira, she obtained a law degree from University of British Columbia and a Master’s in law at the University of Victoria.
Amber provides free legal advocacy services to women in the Downtown Eastside. Her program exists because of generous funding from the Law Foundation of BC. Amber provides information, support and assistance in the following areas of law:
Family law, Ministry of Children and Families (MCFD), minor criminal law issues (including victims of crime), Aboriginal law issues, Police Complaints, Ombudsperson Complaints, Small Claims issues, Freedom of Information Requests.
Amber also provides information, advice and full representation services (including up to Tribunal level) in the following areas:
Welfare, Disability, CPP, Employment Insurance, Worksafe (WCB), Tenancy, Crime Victim Assistance Program appeals, and Human Rights.
Amber is available Monday to Thursday and alternate Fridays at Atira (101 East Cordova Street) and most Tuesdays at the YWCA - Crabtree Corner location (533 E. Hastings Street).
As Amber is the only full-time staff person in the legal advocacy program, it is unlikely that unscheduled appointments can be accommodated. For an appointment please call or email as noted below. Your message will be answered as soon as possible. Given the current demands on the legal advocacy program there may be a 1-3 week wait to make an appointment.

ATIRA’S LEGAL ADVICE CLINIC
Atira also offers a Legal Advice Clinic for women. A lawyer (Katrina), is available to women at Atira’s 101 E. Cordova Street office on Mondays from 1-4pm. Women can book ½ hour appointments to obtain free legal advice in the following areas:
Immigration, Criminal Law, Mental Health Law, Family Law, MCFD, Welfare/Disability, Personal Injury/ICBC, Human Rights, Police Complaints, Wills/Estates and Residential School Claims. Please note that Katrina cannot provide ongoing assistance or representation. Appointment with Katrina can also be booked as noted below.
