The Family Project: Children Who Witness Abuse

Children Who Witness Abuse (CWWA) Support Program Ten-week closed groups for children who have witnessed abuse. Topics covered include:

  • self-esteem
  • feelings
  • families
  • anger
  • abuse
  • problem solving
  • safety planning
  • separation and loss

Children who witness abuse need to have an opportunity to deal with the abuse they have seen and/or experienced before it is denied or repressed. It is important to understand how children are impacted by abuse. Their feelings need to be recognized and validated. Each child wants to feel valued, respected and understood. Children must be seen as unique individuals with different strengths, abilities and needs.

Atira Women’s Resource Society believes individual and group support must be available to help children identify and express emotions surrounding violence, separation, blame, loss and/or ambivalence. Alternatives to violence must be taught. Children who witness abuse often have kept silent about the abuse in their families and will need to be supported in breaking this silence.

The Family Project offers a free Children Who Witness Abuse Support Group for children three through 18 years of age, it is ten weeks long and referrals are accepted year round. Each week a different subject will be discussed. Support will be offered to women while their children attend the group.
