Gachet’s Art School continues to be developed with the introduction of a weekly workshop
series presented by Associate Member, Bernadine Fox and long-time gallery supporter, Karen
Lievesley on The Artist’s Reality: exploring the cultural landscape and realities of being an
artist.
This 4-week workshop series will cover topics ranging from the “The economic truth of being
an artist” to “Ways in which to survive economically”; “The history of artist run centres and
cultural institutions” to “Vancouver’s Art Scene and Outsider Art - where does Gachet !t?”
Participants will be encouraged to think about how they sit in relation to the artist run culture
movement in Canada and speci!cally, Vancouver, as well as help them develop their own arts’
careers.
Through a weekly lecture series, and interactive discussion, participants will learn all about
being an artist and the cultural landscape you inevitably inhabit.
Week 1 – Jan 19th - learning about the art system: CARFAC, the difference between art
galleries and artist run centres, how Gachet sits in relation to other organizations.
Week 2 – Jan 26th - a focus on Outsider art, art and healing and the dissident, non-mainstream
artists that Gachet supports and represents.
Week 3 – Feb 2nd - How to develop your portfolio and art practice and the economic realities
of being an artist.
Week 4 – Feb 9th - The best ways to market yourself, get your work out into different
communities and online.
