EWMA Open House with Lovetta Conto
16-year-old War Survivor and Jewelry Designer Transforms Bullets Into Jewelry to Help Other Children of War
Posted: September 15, 2009
Lovetta Conto is a 16-year old inspiration, born in Liberia, West Africa. She fled with her father to Ghana when she was a child to escape the civil war. In the refuge camp, being able to attend school was a struggle in itself. Like most of Africa, schools were not free and the refuge camp was no exception. Despite her father working his hardest to put money together, Lovetta was kicked out of school many times for not being able to pay. However, she felt that education was necessary for her future and struggled to find a balance between real life demands and her homework. When she was 12, she met Cori Stern from the Strongheart Fellowship. With Cori’s help, Lovetta saw her dream of being a designer made into reality. The Akewel'le (aka = also known as, wel'le = love) necklace is made from fired bullet shells that have been melted down and reshaped into a leaf. It is engraved with the word 'Life', as a reminder to Lovetta that "new life can begin after hardship".
Now, Lovetta is a finalist for The International Children's Peace Prize 2008 and coming to Vancouver! On September 25th, Enterprising Women Making Art will hold an Open House showcasing the Akawelle necklace, and introduce the local DTES artisans to those in attendance.
