Atira acquires 120 Jackson Avenue
120 Jackson Avenue
Posted: August 12, 2009
Atira Development Society, which was recently set up as the development arm of Atira Women’s Resource Society, has purchased a heritage building at 120 Jackson Avenue in Vancouver.
Designed by architect William Tuff Whiteway (also the architect for the Sun Tower), the apartment building was designed as a brothel and located in what was then Vancouver’s Red Light District centered on Alexander Street. Ironically, in 1921 it became the headquarters for the British and Foreign Sailors Society whose stated aim was the ‘moral and religious improvement’ of seamen living in the area.
Over the next few years Atira will raise the money it needs to renovate the structure, add 57 units of new housing and house women fleeing violence including women exiting the sex trade, new moms and female child sex workers.

Film Created by BC Youth Selected for Human Rights Watch International Film Festival
Four amazing youth need your Aeroplan miles! Donate your Aeroplan Airmiles to send youth movie makers to New York City Premiere!
The youth, all from Masset on Haida Gwaii, will have the opportunity to attend the premiere of their movie at the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival at the Lincoln Centre in New York City on June 20th.
"Islands of the People", a digital story that documents the youths’ exploration of their culture through the 13-year-old narrator’s grandmother, was selected by Human Rights watch from among more than 250 global submissions. The opportunity to attend the premier, speak following the screening and mingle with 250 or more guests has the potential to transform lives.
None of the youth or their families can afford to finance the trip on their own. We need 175,000 Aeroplan miles to get Amber, Justin, Raven, Jesse, Nonnie Mary & two chaperones from Haida Gwaii to New York. Please help!
For more information call Janice Abbott or Christiane McInnes at 604.331.1407.
