ADVANCING HEALTH-CARE PRACTICE

2.4     Judy's Story

One time in our apartment the washing machine upstairs overflowed and it came right through the ceiling. So everything was wet and had to get fixed and then they had to paint. I had to go around and take everything off the walls, unplug lamps, and get things ready. So they painted and we came home and there was this light that was on a timer so it just comes on at a certain time and, it wasn't on, so he questioned me accusingly about 'why isn't the lamp on?' I said I didn't know, I guess it didn't get plugged in properly after the painters were here. We went to bed and at 2:00 a.m. he woke me up angry 'why is the lamp still on? How come you didn't turn the lamp off?' I just couldn't believe it. It was 2 a.m. and he's mad because a light's on and I thought, it's a light, you can turn it off in the morning, but he got up, turned it off, and came back to the far side of the bed saying 'I can't believe you, that you're so stupid'. It really hurt me.

Frequently through that period I wasn't getting sleep, I couldn't sleep, I wasn't getting a restful sleep. Any little thing and I was waking up and I just really had no energy. I was tired all the time. And I couldn't believe him. Anyway I didn't sleep well after that. I was just like very hurt and frustrated because I just cannot understand how I deserve to be treated that way.
