2011 Strong Women Strong Music Concert

SWSM 2011 Jazz Artists

The stage is set, seven of Vancouver’s most celebrated female jazz artists wait in the wings. Three, two, one! The band plays an instrumental tune to get the show started and away we go. Karin Plato, Laura Crema and Jennifer Scott take the stage and sing to a packed crowd at the Ironworks Studio.

The performances amazing, the songs beautiful, the atmosphere warm and inviting. A spectacular way to spend the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.

Over the past five years Atira has organized the Strong Women Strong Music event to help raise awareness and funds for our work to end violence against women and children. This year we raised more than $4400 thanks to all of our generous supporters and patrons.

Karin Plato, Laura Crema and Jennifer Scott head up the all female band including Wendy Solloway, Sherri Chisholm, Karen Graves and Sharon Minemoto. The performers donate their time and talent for the evening, most of them only seeing each other this one night a year. Hard to believe, hearing them play together makes it sound like this is their regular gig.

Thanks to a few sponsors, Atira was able to offer tickets to women who access our programs and services, a rare treat. "the musicians were stupendous, the food great, and the whole ambience one of enjoyment. I haven’t had such fun in a long time" ~ Participant of one of Atira’s programs.

Did you know that an act of male violence against women occurs every six minutes. Half of these occurring in board daylight. With events like the Strong Women Strong Music concert, Atira’s aim is to raise awareness that male violence against women is still a huge problem but with the support and help from our generous donors and friends we can make change happen!

Thank you to all who came out to support Atira’s work and to celebrate International Women’s Day!
